50p designs are so unique!
For the first time in its history, the Royal Mint has released a competition to the public to come up with designs for 50 pence coins for the London 2012 Olympics. The competition was open to viewers of the BBC’s Blue Peter as well as the general public, too mark the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games in London in two years time.
The competition was open to the whole of the general public, not only viewers of Blue Peter, all in all there will be 29 Olympic designs set to appear on the 50p coins. There have been competitions in the past for the design of coins, plenty of children have entered but none have ever entered, so the Blue Peter side of this competition has opened things up to the 6 – 12 years olds of the country.
Speaking about the competition, Blue Peter editor Tim Levell has said: “This is the first time the Royal Mint has given a child the guaranteed chance to design a circulation coin, so this really is making history.”
Something to maybe put money aside for now that there is set to be around 87million of the 50p coins to be put into circulation. Over the coming two years or so, there will be kids running around, trading coins with their mates and trying to collect all 29 of them.
So, good luck to you if you’re going to be trying to collect all 29 of these coins!
